The picturesque village of Horndon on the Hill has a number of places of interest to explore. The Grade II listed St Peter’s Church of England has been standing since originally built in around 1130. Built from flint rubble with red brick dressings, it is one of the oldest buildings in the village and is a great place for visitors to explore some local history. To the north east lies Horndon-on-the-Hill Family Park, a 32 acre site full of wild flowers and trees including birch, oak, maple and more. Visitors can enjoy numerous activities such as fishing, bird watching and walking along the nature trails complete with boardwalks and ponds. The War Memorial commemorating those who lost their lives during both world wars is also located here and it’s a touching reminder of those who gave their lives for their country. Horndon-on-the-Hill Castle, another grade II listed building, stands as evidence of previous occupiers who lived in this charming little village until at least 1540 when Henry VIII had it demolished as part of his dissolution of the monasteries. Despite its ruined state, these castle remains are a fascinating reminder of its previous life. St John’s Well is another interesting feature in Horndon-on-the-Hill. Legend has it that if you make three wishes while drinking from this well they will come true! Of course no one really knows if this legend is true or merely hearsay, but it makes for an interesting visit nonetheless!
